Conduct

  • Clear communication is crucial to the success of all relationships. But since we’re taking on the music world, conducting is key.
  • Named The Upper Hand, these are a combination of existing and newly created conducting hand gestures, including basic alphabet sign language (A to G), traditional classical motions, and common gestures used in jazz.
  • Using The Upper Hand, the DJ can now easily conduct musicians in and out of their set, with or without musical knowledge, as long as the musician is skilled accordingly.

Benefits

Why should I bother to learn The Upper Hand? Here’s why:

  • Incorporate or conduct a solo musician or a group.
  • Reference to pre-written sheet music is possible.
  • Easy to learn DJ friendly Upper Hand gestures (music theory not needed), and easy to pass on to the musician so that you both understand one another.
  • Easy to learn full list of Upper Hand gestures (music theory needed), and easy to pass on to qualified professional musicians.
  • Easy to incorporate; you don’t need to have played together before to perform together. (NOTE to musicians:  music theory, a trained ear, fluent in your chosen instrument(s) and an understanding of dance music arrangements is not enough.  Be sensitive to the integrity the producer (composer) intended of the track.  A live musician adds to what is considered someone else’s finished product.  So, add well, or add nothing.)

How to Use The Upper Hand

Okay.  You are a DJ or a band leader, and incorporating the Upper Hand, you will:

  • Let the musician know when to play and for how long
  • Crescendo (Increase volume), or Decrescendo (decrease volume)
  • What kind of musical expression you want (e.g. hits or long smooth notes)
  • Many easily understandable, useful, common-sense commands included, going beyond verbal language obstacles, barriers, or loud music interference.
